Talley Vineyards Estate Chardonnay – 2015

Tasting Notes

Pale gold in appearance, the 2015 Estate Chardonnay offers aromas of cantaloupe, yellow apple skin, and a hint of toasted bread crumbs. The palate is juicy and bright. Notes of peach nectar, stone fruit pith, wet river rock, and lemon curd lead to a refreshing and slightly toasty finish.
Vineyard Notes
Yields in 2015 in Coastal San Luis Obispo County were the lowest since 2011 due to inclement spring weather which caused poor fruit set, as well as the effects of the ongoing drought. Warm and dry summer conditions coupled with the small yield, resulted in an early harvest which was completed in our estate vineyards on September 22, 2015. The wines produced in 2015 will be similar to those produced in the immediately preceding vintages of 2013 and 2014, emphasizing harmony and balanced acidity, though with more concentration due to the low yields.

Lucienne Smith Vineyard Pinot Noir – 2015

About Wine:

This wine artfully combines fragrant strawberry and blackberry aromas with earthy, cocoa dust undertones. Flavors of harmonious red and black fruits including tart plums are underpinned by spice.  A high note of acidity balances the wine’s silky mouthfeel and shapes its harmonious and persistent finish.

After harvesting the fruit, they de-stem and hand-sort the grapes before moving them into open-top fermenters where we use gentle, manual punch-downs to protect the delicacy of the Pinot Noir grapes.  Once fermentation is complete, they rack the free-run juice into French oak barrels (42% new) where the wine ages for 12 months before bottling.

About The Smith Vineyard:

The 131-acre Smith Vineyard planted at 590 to 1,280 feet boasts eastern exposure above the fog line for a long growing season.  Its well-draining soils are formed primarily from alluvial materials.  A few exotic Pinot Noir clones (such as Jardini, Calera and Mt. Eden) have been spectacularly successful in this vineyard, lending additional nuance and complexity to this wine.
